What is Proton Therapy?

"A patient who undergoes conventional radiation therapy is exposed to X-rays. As they pass through both healthy and diseased tissue, X-rays leave a track of damage - much like a bullet. This damage can help destroy tumors, but may cause significant harm to surrounding areas.

Protons cause less damage to healthy tissue as they enter the body, and deposit the majority of their destructive energy at the tumor site. As a result, normal, healthy tissue receives less exposure to radiation, resulting in fewer treatment complications."

A New Option in Cancer Treatment

University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute

Until recently, the treatment of cancer was often just as frightening as the diagnosis. It doesn't have to be that way. At the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute, we're committed to changing the way cancer is treated, and the way cancer treatment is experienced. That's why we're developing the newest, least invasive, and most promising tool in use today: Proton Therapy.

New Clinical Findings

University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute physicians and associates will present clinical research findings on proton therapy for prostate cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma and brain cancer from five separate studies Sept. 21-25 at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology in Boston. ASTRO's annual meeting is the premier scientific meeting in radiation oncology. The UF Proton Therapy Institute researchers will spotlight the following:

Sameer Keole, MD -- Comparing the high-dose region isodose fall-off for protons vs. IMRT in prostate cancer: is IMRT superior?

Christina Rodriguez, BS -- Involved proton radiotherapy for stage 2 Hodgkin's lymphoma

Bhisjamjit Chera, MD -- Pelvic proton radiotherapy for high risk prostate cancer

Srividya Duvvuri , PhD-- Comparison of patient positioning accuracy using fiducial or anatomical markers for proton cranial radiotherapy

Liyong Lin, PhD -- In vivo verification of dose delivery to prostate cancer by utilizing PET/CT images taken after proton therapy
